Pastora Mercedes’ Dream: A Feeding Center in Every Community
When Pastora Mercedes was just five years old, she dreamed of a life in which she and her brothers would never be hungry. Now, she dreams of feeding every single child in the Guatemala City garbage dump.
Thanks to your support, Pastora Mercedes comes closer to achieving her goal every day. A spiritual leader in her community, she leads Transforming Futures’ two Feeding Centers in the garbage dump.
We recently sat down with Pastora Mercedes to discuss her vision for the Feeding Centers, the impact of COVID-19, and her health.
What is your goal for the Feeding Centers?
My dream is to feed every child in every community in the Guatemala City garbage dump. Whenever I visit a community in the garbage dump, I am reminded how great the need is, especially how many children need food.
I pray that God will allow me to live to see at least one Feeding Center in every community around the garbage dump.
You were forced to close the Feeding Centers for six months last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. How has it been since they reopened?
It feels like I have come back to life after reopening the Feeding Centers last fall. Seeing children eating hot meals and being surrounded by their love brings me so much joy and gives me life.
I am immensely thankful for our team’s and Transforming Futures’ support, time, and energy. Because of them, we can continue providing food for more than 600 children. Now, we are serving more meals and feeding more children than we were before the pandemic.
How are you feeling?
I have been feeling better, and I am grateful to God for my health. Every day, I witness one of God’s miracles in protecting my health. I’ve even stopped keeping track of all of God’s miracles in my life.
I believe that God is protecting my health so that I can continue my job here in the garbage dump. My thanks go out to everyone who has provided medicine and vitamins.

Thank you. You are not only in my heart, but you are also in God’s heart. I might not know all our supporters’ names, but God knows each of you by name.

God has chosen both me and you to finish the mission that Jesus Christ started on Earth. We have the privilege to continue being used by Him to serve others, especially our children. And in serving others, we are serving Him.
