Our Learning Center Changed Pedro´s Life

When Pedro first walked through the doors of our Learning Center, he couldn’t read. A nine-year-old boy in third grade, he had more urgent concerns than studying: He had to take care of his younger brother.

Trying to make ends meet in the impoverished Guatemala City Garbage Dump, Pedro’s mother worked long hours as a maid. But she was forced to leave her boys alone for most of the day.

At home, Pedro didn’t have the help he needed to finish his homework. And with the pandemic shutting down most schools, he never learned how to read. On top of that, Pedro’s mother wasn’t always able to leave food for the boys.

Thankfully, Pedro found the support he needed in our Learning Center. Now he can read and write! Our teachers say he is eager keep learning and is working hard to become a star student. He also recieves free meals that he shares with his brother.

We’re humbled that our mission has rubbed off on Pedro: He says that when he grows up, he wants to have enough money to be able help people by giving them food.
