Update on Pastor Mercedes

Dear Founding Families and friends,

A lot of things have changed because of COVID-19, today we wanted to share an update from Pastor Mercedes and tell you how she is doing with the current changes in the feeding center. Pastor Mercedes is the founder of  the feeding center and has been feeding children in the garbage city dump  for more than 8 year.

How do you feel about the closure of the feeding center due to government restrictions?

The change from closing the feeding center to providing food baskets has been very difficult for me because in my heart I always wanted to keep our doors open for children. The change has also been difficult for the children that used to come to us on daily basis.

What needs do you see in families after the garbage city dump access was also closed?

It was already a difficult situation to obtain income for families when the city garbage dump was open and now with this closure I see them struggling even more. I am also worried about the children because while the parents are trying to get in garbage dump through blind points they stay at home and sometimes without food until the parents come back from trying to find some income.

How is your family ?

My family and I are going through a hard time because my mom recently passed away and it was very difficult. I believe God is in control and he decided the time and day for us and I have to accept God’s will.

3 members of my family depend on the garbage dump work and it has been difficult for them to find an income while the garbage city dump is closed.

Would you like to share a message to our supporters?

I would like to thank all of our supporters from the bottom of my heart for your love and contributions towards the children of the Guatemalan city dump. I am talking on behalf of all the parents of the children when I say thank you.

Everything that you do for these children is being observed by God and he will reward you. My prayer is that you and your family are good. God bless the work of our hands.

What do you expect to happen in the following days?

I hope this goes away soon. Every day I wake up thinking all of this situation is just a dream but then I realize this is the new reality. I hope we can open the doors of the feeding center soon. I also hope that we can expand our help to more communities to support more children because the need is big, and I don’t know if the garbage dump will be closed forever or will eventually open.

Do you have any prayer request?

Yes, please pray for the children of the garbage dump because they are the ones that suffer the most with this situation. Since the feeding center has been closed we worry for their daily food.

Please also pray for my family, my congregation and for myself that God will always help us and protect us.

I would like to share this scripture in Mathew 25:31 about something that Jesus wanted to remind us about the judgment to the nations, but I was especially called to this verse: 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

God knew from the beginning what was going to happened and he worked out all the pieces so that had his people can provide food at the feeding center. The verse really touches me in the following verse:

35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Jesus was talking about very important things that today many people are doing for others, such as helping and providing food to those in need, but I would like to focus on those supporting children in the garbage dump area. Jesus wasn’t saying we were doing it for the children, but he was saying we are doing it for him.

When you give support to a child or a family in need you have the biggest honor because according to this verse you are giving it to Jesus because when you give to a child is like you are serving a plate of food to Jesus.

I also love the following verses:

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

When he said, “you did for me”, he is saying that plate of food that you served you did for me. Everything that we can give to others is like we are giving it to Jesus and it’s a great honor and privilege to give to Jesus.

My prayer is that Jesus will reward you for your faithfulness towards helping those children in need. Thank you for your support.
