At Transforming Futures, we know the children we serve need computer skills to succeed outside of the Guatemala City Garbage Dump. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that we opened a computer lab in our Learning Center and hired a new part-time teacher—all thanks to your support!
When we opened the computer lab in August, it was the first time nine-year-old Byron used a computer. He was overjoyed to be able to practice typing in English and Kaqchikel (a Mayan language) and work on math problems. “I want to be an elementary teacher. So if I learn the computer today, when I get older, I can help other children learn English and Kaqchikel,” says Byron.
Our new part-time teacher, Jennifer Davila, will focus on teaching technology skills and English. She knows just how important these skills are. “For children that live in this part of Guatemala, where most of them grew up in poverty, it is important to facilitate access to technology and English so they can go out into the world and be successful,” she says.
In our Learning Center, we’ve already been helping around 30 students get their studies back on track after the pandemic disrupted their schooling. Now, they’ll be able to learn new skills by using our computers five days a week in the computer lab.
Getting computers was a huge first step, and it wouldn’t have been possible without your partnership. But we need more equipment, such as internet connections and more computers, to improve the computer lab. Our goal is to expand our education program to reach more students.
With your support, we can teach dozens more children the skills they’ll need to succeed outside of the Garbage Dump and truly transform their futures.
