Transforming Futures: Sharon’s story

Dear Founding Families and friends,

Thanks to your generosity and prayers Transforming Futures is supporting hundreds of families living in the surrounding areas of the garbage dump of Guatemala City. Today we would like to share with you how your partnership is allowing us to impact Sharon’s life.

Transforming Futures: Sharon’s story

Sharon (7) has been supported by our feeding center and educational program. Due to COVID-19, the Guatemalan government restrictions have restricted her from going to both school and the feeding center. We have been able to continue to support her family with food baskets and sending her school work home to allow her to continue to learn since the public school that she attends is not providing any material for her to continue her classes from home.

Here is a little video from Sharon:

Sharon’s mother, Cindy Noemi, moved to a community in the surrounding areas of the city garbage dump 15 years ago. She moved out of her parents’ house to start her life with Sharon as a single mother.

Noemi explained to us that what she is receiving from the feeding center and educational program is a great support to her as a single mother, because it allows her to go to work knowing Sharon is in a safe place and developing in her education. She added “I don’t have the money to pay someone to help her with her homework so her teacher at the educational program is supporting us with that”. The current health crisis has affected the educational development of many children in Guatemala. The government has initiated distance learning classes by sending physical schoolwork home to families. However, about 50% of the children that we support in our educational program have not received these materials. In order to continue supporting their educational development, we have created alternative distance learning classes to prevent delays in their learning.

Noemi said the food baskets have supported the nutrition of her daughter and that she has been able to share with neighbors that are also struggling. The current health and economic situation is impacting every aspect of the way we live our lives, and to those living in extreme poverty the effect has been profound. Particularly in the Guatemala City dump where hundreds of children and families rely on the food we serve at our Feeding Centers. Some of these families will not have income or food assistance in the next couple of weeks because of the restrictions ordered by the Guatemalan government.

Transforming Futures is still on the front lines of the city garbage dump. Our goal is to support Pastora Mercedes as she looks for ways to keep our doors open and provide the children with food.
